Our location

Old St. John Site

The Old St. John Congress and Event Centre is located in a historic 19th century hospital. The same site also contains the building in which one of the earliest infirmaries in medieval Europe was founded. Visitors to our location can therefore enjoy the experience offered by one of the most impressive pieces of medical heritage anywhere in the world.

The medieval St. John’s Hospital was once the largest institution in the city for the care of the sick, the poor and the needy. Using stories, artefacts and works of art, visitors to the St. John’s Hospital Memling Museum can look back on 800 years of medical history.

Later, a new hospital was built on the same site. From the 19th century until 1976, the Old St. John Hospital was one of Bruges primary medical facilities, with large communal wards for the treatment of patients. These wards have now been renovated and transformed into multi-functional spaces, whose unique background gives an interesting ‘twist’ to any event.

Bruges

A unique spot in a remarkable city

The Old St. John Congress and Event Centre is a unique item of medical-cultural patrimony in the centre of the UNESCO world-heritage city of Bruges.

Bruges is a city on a human scale, with a wide choice of places to eat and drink. There is something to suit every taste and budget: fun bistros, pleasant brasseries, even star-rated restaurants. In short, Bruges is a culinary – yes, even a gastronomic – mecca.

Historic Bruges is also synonymous with culture in all its forms. There is a broad variety of different cultural activities, ranging from museums and exhibitions, right through to concerts and the theatre.

Access

There are two different entrances to the Old St. John Site: via the gate at Mariastraat 38 or via the Zonnekemeers, which is also where the car park can be accessed.

By car or public transport

People travelling by car can park in the Zonnekemeers car park. There are also other car parks nearby: Parking Centrum Zand or Parking Centrum Station.

The Old St. John Site is just a 10-minute walk from the main railway station. When you leave the station (on the city centre side), you cross over the station square and follow the signposts via the Oostmeers until you arrive at the Zonnekemeers.

On foot

The entrance on the Zonnekemeers is a 10-minute walk from the main railway station. The entrance on the Mariastraat is opposite the Church of Our Lady, in the middle of the city centre.
